A kind of bacteria that causes gingivitis is anaerobic or living in the absence of oxygen. It is for this reason that they build themselves up in areas impenetrable by oxygen or by brushing and flossing and so is mouth saliva. Saliva’s defensive characteristic controls bacterial growth that causes gingivitis. This is because saliva has plenty of oxygen and specific enzymes that facilitate antibody formation to prevent gum disease. Saliva is being lessened by dehydrating activities like smoking, diet pills, alcohol intake, and taking specific dehydrating medicines. Smoking declines body’s immune system and slow saliva production. Some diet pills are stimulants to hasten body metabolism but dries out water in the body. Hangover after drinking alcohol is an indication of body dehydration. Some medicines also have dehydration as one of the side effects. It is important to replenish loss water and observe sufficient re-hydration by drinking at least half-ounce of water per pound of body weight for the body to produce plenty saliva and prevent gingivitis. Products that promote re-hydration and effective in killing oral anaerobic bacteria will also help in the fight against gingivitis.
